Cepas: the renovation of an Algeciras classic by the sea
More than ten years ago, they embarked on this exciting project.
Project overview
Location: Paseo Marítimo de Getares, Algeciras (Cádiz).
Type of venue: restaurant with over 10 years of history, located by the sea, with an indoor dining area and outdoor terrace.
Type of project: complete renovation and redesign (reopened in May).
Style: Mediterranean with boho touches; a palette of earthy and terracotta tones.
Area: 60 m² indoors + 135 m² of terrace (around 195 m² in total, with a strong emphasis on the outdoor space overlooking the sea).
Capacity: around 80 diners.
Duration of the renovation: 7–8 months.
They embarked on this exciting project more than ten years ago.
The concept they imposed was the creation of a menu of elaborated dishes that keeps the balance between the traditional, the fresh and the innovative.
Their story has been one of culinary success, and we are confident that this will continue following the renovation. Both the indoor and outdoor spaces have been designed to feel welcoming and understated, with impeccable taste and exceptional furniture.
3 main objectives
Cepas was not a new venue, but a well-established restaurant with more than a decade of history. In addition, a large part of its total area is taken up by the terrace (135 m² outdoors compared with 60 m² indoors), which shaped the objectives of the renovation:
- Completely refresh the restaurant’s image without compromising the identity that its loyal customers already know and love.
- Make the terrace —more than twice the size of the indoor space— the true focal point, taking full advantage of its privileged seafront location.
- Create a welcoming, understated atmosphere, with furniture capable of withstanding intensive use and the challenges of a coastal setting.
Renovating a classic without losing its loyal customers.
The challenge of renovating a long-established restaurant is to refresh its image without making it unrecognisable to its regular customers. A Mediterranean aesthetic with boho touches and earthy tones was chosen: fresh and new, yet warm and familiar.
A terrace at the heart of the restaurant.
With 135 m² of terrace compared with 60 m² indoors, the outdoor area is not simply an addition: it is the main space. The project therefore placed particular emphasis on outdoor furniture and its durability, while maintaining visual consistency with the indoor dining area.
One design language for the interior and terrace.
With its seafront location and the terrace taking centre stage, coordinated furniture was chosen for both spaces, creating a single, cohesive identity as customers move from indoors to outdoors.
Furniture designed for a seafront setting.
Sea air and humidity place particular demands on furniture. For the outdoor areas, priority was given to pieces designed to withstand the elements and retain their appearance despite exposure to salt air and changing weather conditions.
Adding variety without compromising harmony.
The project sought to create a rich mix of textures —rope, soft upholstery, natural wood and handcrafted ceramics— while maintaining a neutral, cohesive palette to ensure the overall atmosphere feels warm and inviting without becoming visually overwhelming.
Our team found the right solutions
The MisterWils team, responsible for this redesign, created a welcoming space with a Mediterranean style featuring boho touches, where earthy and terracotta tones take centre stage. A variety of textures ranges from rope chairs —such as the ALSIMER ROPE AND METAL CHAIR in brick, brown and green tones— to chairs with soft upholstery in neutral shades, natural wood tables (the STEFFY table and MAYER teak tabletops) and handcrafted tabletops made with ceramic tiles (the MICAELA wood and ceramic tabletop and the HORMIGO micro-concrete tabletop on KATELAN table bases). A carefully considered selection of furniture designed for every area, both indoors and outdoors. A warm, inviting design, rich in detail. —such as the ALSIMER ROPE AND METAL CHAIR in brick, brown and green tones— to chairs with soft upholstery in neutral shades, natural wood tables (the STEFFY table and MAYER teak tabletops) and handcrafted tabletops made with ceramic tiles (the MICAELA wood and ceramic tabletop and the HORMIGO micro-concrete tabletop on KATELAN table bases).. A carefully considered selection of furniture designed for every area, both indoors and outdoors. A warm, inviting design, rich in detail.
At Cepas, we deliberately chose to avoid:
- Changing the image so drastically that regular customers would no longer recognise the restaurant: the space was renovated while preserving its warmth and welcoming character.
- Using furniture on the terrace that was not designed for outdoor use: given its seafront location, pieces capable of withstanding humidity and salt air were selected.
- Treating the interior and terrace as two separate projects: both spaces were coordinated to create a single, cohesive identity.
- Overloading the space with too many materials: a variety of textures was introduced while maintaining a neutral, cohesive palette.
- Using delicate finishes that are difficult to maintain: ceramic, micro-concrete and teak were chosen for their durability and ease of cleaning.
These are the key decisions behind the final result:
- Mediterranean style with boho touches and earthy tones. A timeless, welcoming aesthetic that refreshes the restaurant’s image without feeling cold or trend-driven: ideal for a restaurant that wants to remain relevant for another ten years.
- Rope and metal chairs. Rope adds Mediterranean texture and breathability, while the metal frame provides the durability required for the intensive daily use of a well-established restaurant. The chairs are also lightweight, making them easier for staff to move.
- Handcrafted ceramic and micro-concrete tabletops. They add character and a distinctive handcrafted feel while providing highly durable, easy-to-clean surfaces, ideal for the intensive daily use of a busy restaurant with a carefully curated menu.
- Teak tables for the most exposed areas. Teak withstands humidity and proximity to the sea particularly well, and the tabletop can be refinished over time. It is a wood designed to last in coastal environments.
- Coordinated indoor and outdoor furniture. Choosing pieces from the same aesthetic family for the dining room and terrace creates a single, cohesive identity while making the most of the restaurant’s privileged seafront location. Every restaurant teaches us something different.
At Cepas, we confirmed that renovating a business with more than ten years of history is not about erasing the past, but about updating its image while preserving the warmth that made it so popular. We also learned to shape the project around the actual distribution of the space: when the terrace (135 m²) is more than twice the size of the interior (60 m²), the majority of the investment and the focus on durability should go towards the outdoor furniture. A Mediterranean palette of earthy tones, natural textures and coordinated furniture across the interior and terrace can completely transform a venue without making it lose its soul. And in a seafront location, choosing materials designed to withstand the elements —teak, ceramic and rope on metal frames— is what ensures that the new look will stand the test of time and exposure to salt air.
Enjoying great food by the sea is a true privilege.
If you are in Algeciras and want to enjoy a meal in a privileged setting, with an excellent menu and a team of professionals who pay attention to every last detail, it’s simple: book your table at Restaurante Cepas.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you renovate a well-established restaurant without losing its loyal customers?
By refreshing the image without erasing its identity: a warm, timeless aesthetic (in this case, Mediterranean with boho touches and earthy tones) that feels new while remaining recognisable and welcoming to loyal customers.
In a restaurant with more terrace space than indoor space, where should the focus be?
Outdoors. When the terrace is more than twice the size of the interior —at Cepas, 135 m² compared with 60 m²—, most of the furniture and the focus on durability should be dedicated to outdoor pieces, while ensuring they maintain the same aesthetic identity as the indoor dining area.
What furniture is suitable for a seafront restaurant?
Pieces designed to withstand the elements and salt air: teak wood, ceramic or micro-concrete tabletops, and rope chairs with metal frames, which resist humidity and sea air better than untreated wood.
Are handcrafted ceramic tabletops practical for restaurants?
Yes. As well as adding unique character, they are highly durable and easy-to-clean surfaces, making them ideal for the intensive daily use of a restaurant.
How do you coordinate furniture between the interior and the terrace?
By choosing pieces from the same aesthetic family and colour palette for both spaces. This creates a single, cohesive identity as you move from the dining room to the terrace, which is essential when the outdoor space is just as important as the interior.
Why choose rope and metal chairs for a restaurant?
Rope adds Mediterranean texture and breathability, while the metal frame provides the durability needed for intensive use. The chairs are lightweight, easy for staff to move, and work equally well indoors and outdoors.
Is teak a good choice near the sea?
Yes. Teak withstands humidity and salt air particularly well, and its surface can be sanded and refinished over time, making it especially suitable for coastal settings.
Are these furniture pieces available to reorder or expand later?
Much of the furniture used at Cepas is part of MisterWils’ permanent stock, making it possible to replace items with the same model or expand the space while maintaining a consistent aesthetic.
