The project, led by Carmen Adán and Víctor Piñero (of La Candela in Cádiz) alongside Javier Selvático and Omar Osuna, occupies premises of approximately 300 m² featuring an indoor dining area and a large terrace overlooking the bay.
Located in the new dining area of the Bahía Sur shopping centre in San Fernando, BRABA is a restaurant that combines traditional cuisine with an innovative spirit in a spacious and welcoming setting designed to enhance the dining experience.
3 main objectives
Before choosing a single piece, BRABA had three very specific objectives that shaped the entire interior design:
- To make a 300 m² venue divided between an indoor dining area and a terrace feel like one warm, cohesive space rather than two separate environments.
- To give its traditional cuisine, “without pretension or shortcuts”, a contemporary setting without falling into either conventional rustic style or an overly modern aesthetic.
- To ensure the furniture could withstand the intensive demands of a restaurant — daily turnover, constant cleaning and a terrace exposed to the sea breeze — while maintaining its carefully considered appearance over time.
The client wanted a welcoming atmosphere without sacrificing a sense of spaciousness.
In a 300 m² open-plan venue, there is a risk that the dining area can feel cold or noisy. This was addressed by using warm materials (wood, natural fibres and neutral tones) and continuous banquette seating to visually divide the space without building partitions, creating more intimate areas within the open dining room.
Comfort was essential for long meals.
A restaurant focused on quality ingredients invites guests to linger. That is why wooden chairs with upholstered seats and ergonomic backrests were prioritised, along with banquettes featuring generous cushions, allowing diners to enjoy a long, leisurely meal in complete comfort.
The terrace overlooking the bay required furniture designed for outdoor use.
The sea breeze and humidity make untreated wood unsuitable. Instead, materials designed to withstand outdoor conditions were chosen (aluminium, synthetic rattan and technical rope), maintaining the natural aesthetic of the interior while providing the durability required outdoors.
Two areas, two different rhythms: dining room and bar.
The dining room calls for a relaxed atmosphere; the bar, for a more dynamic one. The two areas were differentiated through height and materials — wooden bar stools and a counter clad in ceramic and wood — without compromising the overall visual harmony.
Our team found the right solutions
The interior design, created by the MisterWils team, aims to create a natural and warm atmosphere in which materials take centre stage. Wood, plant fibres and neutral tones combine to create a balanced and relaxed ambience that complements the restaurant’s culinary offering.
The selected furniture reinforces this identity, creating a relaxed atmosphere that invites guests to enjoy their time at the table. Wooden chairs upholstered in natural tones take centre stage — such as the GROF WOODEN CHAIR and the BELINDA WOODEN CHAIR — combined with wooden tables featuring metal bases (pine tops on frames such as IZZA BAJO and DOBLE FERRO), as well as continuous banquette seating with generous cushions that provide comfort and help organise the space. Together, these elements strike a balance between warmth and durability, creating a flexible layout that adapts to all types of gatherings. — such as the GROF WOODEN CHAIR and the BELINDA WOODEN CHAIR — combined with wooden tables featuring metal bases (pine tops on frames such as IZZA BAJO and DOBLE FERRO), as well as continuous banquette seating with generous cushions that provide comfort and help organise the space. Together, these elements strike a balance between warmth and durability, creating a flexible layout that adapts to all types of gatherings.
The bar area introduces a more dynamic atmosphere, with wooden bar stools (the STRADA HIGH STOOL and the upholstered SAGARI) positioned along a continuous counter clad in ceramic and wood, creating a more informal meeting point within the restaurant.
Lighting is another standout feature of the project, with large natural-fibre pendant lights suspended above the tables (banana-leaf shades MALASIA and CATYSA, and the rattan DINDA).. These pieces add texture and volume to the space while casting a warm light that enhances the restaurant’s welcoming atmosphere.
In a hospitality project, avoiding mistakes is just as important as making the right choices. At BRABA, we deliberately avoided:
- Placing tables too close together: staff circulation and guest comfort were prioritised over squeezing in two extra covers.
- Mixing too many different materials: a restrained palette (wood, natural fibres, metal and neutral tones) was chosen to give the space room to breathe and avoid an overly busy look.
- Using untreated wood on the terrace: given its location overlooking the bay, outdoor-grade materials were selected to prevent the furniture from deteriorating after just one season.
- Uniform, cold lighting: warm lighting distributed across different areas was chosen instead of illuminating the entire ceiling evenly, which would flatten the atmosphere.
- Pieces that are difficult to replace: distinctive items without readily available replacements were avoided, ensuring that the restaurant can maintain a consistent aesthetic over time.
It is not about what was chosen, but why. These are the key decisions behind the project:
- Wooden chairs with upholstered seats rather than all-wood chairs. The wooden backrest adds warmth and withstands intensive use, while the upholstered seat provides extra comfort for longer meals. The upholstery can also be replaced: if it wears out after three years, the seat can be reupholstered without having to replace the entire chair.
- Tables with wooden tops and metal bases. Metal provides stability and withstands intensive use, while the wooden top can be sanded and refinished. It is a combination designed specifically for hospitality environments, not simply to look good on opening day.
- Continuous banquette seating instead of more individual chairs. Banquettes make better use of the perimeter, create a greater sense of intimacy and make service easier, as staff do not have to move chairs to access the tables.
- Large natural-fibre pendant lights. They visually lower the ceiling above each table, define different areas within the open-plan dining room and diffuse a warm light that encourages guests to linger. Natural fibres also help absorb some of the noise, which is particularly important in a busy dining room.
- Pieces readily available from stock. Almost all the core furniture used in the project is kept permanently in stock. If a chair breaks a year from now, the same model can be replaced without long lead times or compromising the visual consistency of the dining room.
Every restaurant teaches us something different.
At BRABA, we confirmed that a large, open-plan space does not need walls to create a sense of intimacy: by combining continuous banquette seating, large natural-fibre pendant lights above each table and a palette of warm materials, “micro-environments” can be created within a single dining room. The space feels bright and spacious, while each table offers its own more intimate experience. Working with pieces that are readily available from stock also makes medium-term maintenance much easier, something restaurant operators often appreciate even more in the second year than on opening day.
Interior and exterior blend in perfect harmony.
The result is a contemporary, balanced space where the interior design and furniture complement BRABA’s culinary concept: traditional cuisine “without pretension or shortcuts”, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens and designed to be enjoyed in a carefully curated setting full of character.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of furniture is best suited to a high-traffic restaurant?
Pieces with a solid structure (solid wood or metal) and repairable finishes. At BRABA, wooden chairs with reupholsterable seats were combined with tables featuring wooden tops and metal bases, all designed to withstand intensive daily use.
Are upholstered chairs more problematic in hospitality settings?
No, provided the upholstery is contract-grade and can be reupholstered. The advantage is twofold: greater comfort during longer meals and the option to renew just the seat when it becomes worn, without having to replace the entire chair.
How can you create a sense of intimacy without building partitions?
With continuous banquette seating that visually divides the space, large pendant lights that “lower the ceiling” above each table, and carefully considered spacing between tables. This creates more intimate areas within an open-plan dining room.
What type of furniture is suitable for a terrace by the sea?
Furniture exposed to sea breezes and humidity must be specifically designed for outdoor use: aluminium, synthetic rattan or technical rope. These materials maintain the natural aesthetic of the interior while withstanding the elements.
What type of lighting encourages customers to stay longer?
Warm, zoned lighting rather than uniform, cold lighting. Natural-fibre lampshades diffuse a soft light and also help reduce noise in the dining area.
Are these pieces available from stock for replacements or future expansion?
Yes. Most of BRABA’s core furniture is part of MisterWils’ permanent stock, so the same pieces can easily be replaced or additional items ordered if the venue is expanded, while maintaining a consistent aesthetic.
