We will tell you where the concept of bold furniture comes from.

In 2009, Massimiliano Iorio and Stéphane Arriubergé – then artistic director of the long-established furniture company Habitat – founded the furniture publisher Moustache and launched their first product: the Bold chair. It was a seat with sinuous lines, made up of two tubular metal pieces joined together, which updated the usual forms of tubular steel chairs. On the outside, it was covered with a thin, removable polyurethane foam that nevertheless provided astonishing comfort.

That chair made them famous among interior designers all over the world; today, it is already a classic, and very awarded: it is exhibited in museums such as the MoMA in New York, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, the Design Museum in Zurich… Now, a new piece has just appeared in the collection: the Bold stool, which makes use of the same materials and is also characterized by its curved structure.

We don’t know if it was a planned move or not, but what is clear is that Arriubergé and Iorio could not have launched their new piece at a better time… nor with a more appropriate name. The reason? As we already announced a few months ago, one of the decorative trends that is dominating 2021 is the use of curved furniture and, guess what: it has been christened ‘Bold’, exactly like the Moustache chair and stool.

What is the Bold trend?

The English word “bold” translates in Spanish as atrevido, llamativo. It is, in fact, the name given to bold letters in typography. The Bold decorative trend, on the other hand, refers to sinuous pieces and furniture, with curves which are now experiencing their greatest boom. Aren’t they bolder than the traditional furniture with straight lines, made to fit perfectly in the box of our always square rooms?

Precisely, those curved furniture are usually protagonists in interiors of the Warm Minimalism trend that swept at the end of last year and continues to establish itself as one of the dominant trends this 2021.

Yes, it is rare to see the terms “minimalism” and “warm” together, as they almost seem antonyms. The first alludes to neat, organized spaces, empty of all non-essentials. The second one, to places where we feel comfortable, tucked in, at home.

However, homes that embrace this decorative style manage to unite both in environments that breathe spaciousness and order, and that are cozy thanks to their natural and bare materials -such as wood, linen, wool, natural fibers…- and their choice of a color palette ranging from neutrals to terracottas and oranges. In addition, plants and abstract art in soft tones are also more than welcome.

But above all, what makes these spaces so pleasant is the Bold trend, that is, the prevalence of curved and organic lines in the furniture, which refer us to nature, to the human and also at the same time, to the utmost perfection. After all, the circle is a primordial symbol, used since the beginning of time, which represents both paradise and the earthly whole.

So sinuous furniture invites us to occupy it with its flowing forms, which move away from rigidity, closer to the human. For all these reasons, its boom makes special sense at this time: lately, due to the health crisis, it is the human and the natural that we have missed the most.

Furniture and pieces perfect for embracing the Bold trend

There are many products we can ally ourselves with to join the Bold trend, ranging from furniture to decorative accessories. In the latter field, for example, we find pieces like the Kawai table lamp, with its rounded ‘mushroom’ shape, which is very trendy. Or didn’t you know that this type of lamp is more fashionable than ever? We can’t stop seeing them everywhere!

There is something in their soft lines, in their indirect light, in their organic but at the same time sober look, that makes us feel immediately attracted to them. This one is made of metal, and is sold with a matte black powder coating, or with an orange finish.

Another sure hit? The Yaviky circular coffee table, superb and imposing, with a steel frame with black powder-coated finish, and a wood top with beveled edge.

Thanks to its Bold rounded shapes, it takes up less space than a rectangular one, is more visually versatile and facilitates the flow of passage in the room. Plus, it’s more democratic: no one will stay at the headboard and miss out on interesting conversations!

The Petunia chair, on the other hand, has it all, as it brings together in a single piece several of this year’s most popular trends. So it has curved shapes in its backrest, but it is also upholstered with sheepskin or wool bouclé fabric, another of the star materials of the season thanks to the cozy feeling it offers. It is sold in various colors, ranging from white to a beautiful and vibrant orange, through all kinds of grays.

Natural fibers and the curved shapes are characteristics of the Bold trend? Yes, they are! Both have conquered interior designers around the world, and both are found in this lounge chair made of natural bamboo and rattan pith, which includes a cushion upholstered in textile in ecru tones. If it looks comfortable at first glance, that’s because it is… but also because the corners are ‘aggressive’ to the eye, while the rounded edges of this piece of furniture soften them and make it irresistible.

Embraces are curved; so is our mother’s womb. Nothing can wrap up better than the sinuous, the enveloping lines that move away from the straight line. That’s why furniture like the Angelo Gris sofa makes you want to relax so much.

Moreover, thanks precisely to those curves that are out of the ordinary, that seem to break the rules of ‘what should be’, it works perfectly as a statement piece, that is, as the most striking element of a room, the one around which the rest of the environment has to be built.
