Have you ever wondered how the Pantone color of the year is chosen, which this year is a violet called Very Peri? According to the company Pantone, creator of the world’s most widespread color identification, comparison and communication system for graphic arts, the process of selecting the color of the year involves an in-depth study and analysis of trends.

So, the brand’s experts thoroughly analyze the market in search of new influences coming from the most fashionable shades in the entertainment industry (even in films being shot), traveling art collections, new artists, fashion, all areas of design, social networks, new technologies, popular tourist destinations… and even new lifestyles, gaming and entertainment trends and socio-economic conditions.

Once they detect what the new dominant hue is, they name it “Pantone Color of the Year,” and the resulting shade then influences (as it has for over 20 years) the development of new products across multiple industries, including fashion, interior decorating, and industrial and graphic design.

Remember when Millennial Pink was everywhere? Perhaps its most emblematic application was at the Sketch London restaurant, especially in its The Gallery room. The establishment had been open since 2003, but it was in 2016, when Pantone named color of the year a pink between bubblegum and powdery, that it became a world-famous attraction thanks to its eye-catching shade.

This year, 2022, Very Peri is Pantone’s color of the year, a new color created expressly by the company for the first time to celebrate the character of our current global era. “Showcasing a carefree confidence and bold curiosity that encourages our creative, inquisitive and intriguing spirit, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us to a new vision as we rewrite our lives,” the brand explains.

The latest trends in video games, the growing popularity of the metaverse and the increasing presence of the artistic community in the digital space have all played a role in the decision.

How does Pantone 2022 Very Peri influence interior design?

After a few years in which neutral tones (not only in natural fibers and woods, but also in textiles and accessories) had become predominant in the most fashionable interiors, experts predict that color will return in 2022. It will be at first in timid outbreaks, yes, but it seems that there is a desire to reflect in our spaces that optimism that brings the relaxation of the global health crisis situation.

By encompassing the qualities of the blues and, at the same time, having a purplish-red hue, Very Peri shows “a cheerful and lively attitude, as well as a dynamic presence that stimulates the courage to create and imaginative expression,” according to Pantone. Would you dare to bring it into your home?

Interior designers of the stature of the Masquespacio studio are already doing it. We can see it, for example, in the pieces of their bedroom created completely from scratch for their brand Mas Creations, already in 2020! Clearly, they are visionaries

It is also possible to integrate the violet tone in the kitchen, through a tiled wall, as they do with a fresh and daring result.

Argentine designer Andrรฉs Reisinger, founder of Reisinger Studio, also experiments with the violet tones of Very Peri in his digital creations, which plunge us directly into a metaverse that increasingly serves as inspiration for the world of interior design.

Reisinger is, in fact, a designer of interiors, product and digital landscapes as dreamlike as surreal, always with a futuristic touch. One of his most acclaimed works on Instagram is the Hortensia chair, which already exists in the real world.

But using the Very Peri color, it’s its Crowded Elevator chair that’s turning heads. The piece was unveiled late last year at the prestigious Salone del Mobile in Milan.

The great editor of decorative accessories H&M Home, with a worldwide presence, has also chosen the lilac tone for many pieces of its new collection. So, if you do not dare with an armchair or a wall, you can try to introduce this color at home through textiles (tablecloths, cushions, bedspreads or napkins, for example), decorative plates, and even vases. In addition, it is not uncommon to combine it with details in natural fibers, another of the musts of the season.

Very Peri: Better with natural fibers

If you are aware of the latest trends in decoration, you will know that natural and bare materials will settle even more in 2022, a year in which we will continue to try to curb by all means the damage to the planet. Therefore, Eco-Friendly, Wabi-Sabi and Japandi styles will triumph, characterized by the use of wood and natural fibers, sustainable raw materials.

Rattan, bamboo and wicker from responsibly managed forests are the stars of the season. In addition, they give rise to products that have to be handcrafted, another of the most popular trends.

So, in a society in which unbridled consumerism and mass production prevail, the handmade continues to make its way triumphantly as a decoration trend for 2022, both to bring humanity to our interiors and to value and preserve traditional trades.

A perfect example? The Flosy coffee table, made of wicker and natural fibers, in this case, braided rattan. Exotic in style, it goes well with powerful tones such as Very Peri. Can you imagine it with this transparent glass vase, in the shape of a wavy pear, from H&M?

The Thomson rattan bench proves that when it comes to natural fibers, the possibilities are endless. With its restrained yet flexible forms, the Nordic-style piece is an absolute candy if we can imagine it with one of those lilac-toned cushions that H&M has also launched.

Lilac tones and natural fibers, the kings of the season

The violet shade Very Peri, chosen by Pantone as the color of the year 2022, will enter with force in our interiors this season. To combine it, nothing like natural fibers, which are both sustainable and artisanal, two of the attributes that we most pursue when embracing new materials. Have you seen how the best interior designers use them?
