San Tomás Bormujos: interior design crafted with care
In the heart of Bormujos, the new San Tomás establishment stands as a testament to ‘design with soul’.
This place is not just a café or a bakery; it is a sensory experience where the warmth of home blends with cutting-edge contemporary design, striking a perfect balance between rustic and industrial styles.
The project stands out for its selection of materials that convey a sense of authenticity. Natural wood takes centre stage, featuring in sturdy, handcrafted tables and an elegant cladding of vertical slats that lends rhythm and warmth to the walls. This organic element is balanced by the understated flooring: a combination of cement-toned porcelain stoneware with hydraulic tile rugs that delineate the bar and high-table areas, lending a nostalgic, artisanal touch.
One of the most striking visual elements is the use of greenery. A large overhead structure suspended above the bench overflows hanging plants, creating an organic visual barrier that breaks up the linearity of the ceiling and refreshes the atmosphere. This ‘hanging garden’ interacts with the large windows, which allow the evening light of Bormujos to flood every corner, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors.
Comfort has been prioritised through carefully selected pieces of furniture. Highlights include the burgundy velvet chairs, which add a touch of vibrant, sophisticated colour, and the iconic leather Chesterfield sofa, which invites you to linger in an almost homely reading nook.
The lighting is designed to create distinct zones. Whilst the circulation areas feature technical recessed spotlights, the communal spaces are lit by geometric copper cage lamps and suspended linear fixtures made of wood and metal, which cast a warm, focused light.
At San Tomás Bormujos, every detail—from the hand-painted lettering on the walls to the layout of its display cases—echoes its motto: ‘Craftsmanship for the senses’. A space that proves that good interior design is the key to enjoying a good cup of coffee.
