Decorating trends for 2022 are betting on continuing the trail of serene and comfortable spaces in which we feel safe that began last year, but adding new touches of hope in the form of color.

Two years ago we learned to appreciate our home as a refuge, the past year has taught us to love it unconditionally. Now, finally, we give the importance it deserves to the decoration of interior spaces, those in which we spend most of our time and that influence so much in our welfare.

With all this in mind, we put together what we foresee to be the big trends in interior decoration for 2022.

tendencias en decoración de interiores

1. Warm Minimalism

If last year warm minimalism triumphed, this year we have it clear: spaces equipped only with what is necessary are here to stay. The latest trends in decoration for 2022 exhort us both to keep our environment in order and avoid rooms overloaded with objects we don’t need -science assures us that this calms us down- and to choose pieces for our home that we really value and that make us feel especially comfortable.

Little, but very selected and very comfortable, is the guideline. Therefore, textures will be the main protagonists of the year (and the more tasty, the better): so, for example, wool bouclé or “sheepskin” is still in vogue to upholster chairs, sofas and armchairs and create the coziest corners.

An example? Lasilla Petunia, with tubular steel structure and upholstered with this textile (in the color of your choice) that will be a trend in furniture in 2022.

Another furniture trend for 2022 will be sofas inspired by the Soriana, which designers Afra and Tobia Scarpa created for Cassina in the 1970s and which interior designers still love.

Getting hold of one from that period is complicated, buying a Cassina reissue is prohibitively expensive, but we keep seeing it in editorials and even in the homes of the influencers who take the most care of their interiors, so it’s only a matter of time before some version of it arrives soon in all the decoration stores.

2. Small explosions of color

As advocated by warm minimalism, and as marked by Pantone’s new 2022 shade, Very Peri, the season will be marked by small bursts of optimistic, bold colors that depart from the neutrals and warms that have dominated the last two years.

tendencia de decoración en 2022 - colores optimistas y llamativos

“Showing a carefree confidence and a bold curiosity that encourages our creative, inquisitive and intriguing spirit, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us to a new vision as we rewrite our lives,” they explain from the influential brand.
“Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri puts the future ahead in a new light,” they say, a vision they share with architects and interior designers.

González Arquitectos, for example, already assured the specialized publication AD at the end of last year: “The second half of 2021 has to be optimistic: we are betting on playfulness, incorporating cheerful winks through shape and color”.

The change, however, will be progressive: thus, decorating trends for 2022 dictate that we will fill our homes with those clear and basic shades that bring us calm, solidity and reliability, but we will season them with touches of color that invite joy.

To do so, we can ally ourselves with chairs like Izmal, in Mid Century style, with a tubular steel structure, black powder-coated finish and seat and back upholstered in red, eggplant, brown or rust textile..

This predominance of neutral tones with bursts of saturation is precisely what interior decorating trends for 2022 advocate, such as Scandi-Boho, with its curious mix of predictability and exoticism.

3. Natural and recycled materials

The Eco-Friendly, Wabi-Sabi and Japandi styles, with their penchant for natural and bare materials, will become even more established in 2022, a year in which we will continue to try our best to curb damage to the planet.

To this end, we will continue to focus on sustainable raw materials such as rattan, bamboo, wicker and wood from responsibly managed forests, just as the best interior designers do.

For the same reason, interior design trends for 2022 suggest that furniture made from recycled wood, such as the large Joquer dining table, will gain in importance.

In addition, its craftsmanship also makes it present the marks and irregularities typical of the wear and tear caused by the passage of time, something that adds texture and charisma to the piece and that, as we will see in the next point, continues to be a trend in the furniture of 2022.

4. Handcrafted pieces

In a society where unbridled consumerism and mass production are the norm, handcrafts continue to make their way triumphantly as a decoration trend for 2022, both to bring humanity to our interiors and to enhance and preserve traditional trades.

Piezas artesanales: tendencia de decoración 2022

Not only do we see this type of handmade pieces in the projects of the most prominent designers and large multinational decoration companies; the designer Moisés Nieto, for example, has just launched La Hacería, the first Spanish search engine that allows you to find the best craftswomen in the country, both by discipline and by location. The project won an award at Madrid Fashion Capital 2020.

“It’s true that there is now a craftingeclosion after so many years working on it,” explained Elena Goded, president of the Society of Contemporary Crafts (SACo).

“We believe it is due to two reasons: first, there is a trend towards a change in philosophy and way of life, in which intimacy and the environment that surrounds us in daily life are much more valued, leading to a selective consumption in which we want to own fewer objects, but of more personal and emotional value. On the other hand, it is impressive how Covid has led us to value ‘our burrow’ as a consequence of confinement,” he continues.

For all these reasons, don’t hesitate: follow the decoration trends for 2022 and go for handmade, such as the Bayona wood and rope chair, made of handcrafted wood in solid laurel wood with a natural finish.

5. Curved and organic lines

The prevalence of curved and organic lines that refer us to nature continue to lead the latest trends in furniture in 2022. Thus, Bold furniture will continue to triumph one more year, as it encourages the creation of friendly and more human spaces, which at the same time, also refer to the utmost perfection. After all, the circle is a primordial symbol, used since the beginning of time, representing both paradise and the earthly whole.

So sinuous furniture invites us to occupy it with its flowing forms, which move away from rigidities, allowing us to move freely. For all these reasons, its boom makes special sense at this time: lately, due to the health crisis, it is the human and the natural that we have missed the most.
For all these reasons, trends in interior decoration in 2022 state that it will be a good choice to opt for furniture with simple, light and refined lines. To make no mistake, nothing like opting for pieces like the Marthan upholstered armchair, with a Nordic style and rounded shapes, upholstered in velvet fabric and with arms in solid ash wood with a wenge finish.

6. A (good) space for teleworking

In the last two years, the telework area has become almost essential in any home. But not only for periods when we must “compulsorily” work at home; also as a ‘special corner’ for all those who have realized that they work better at home, and are lucky enough that their company allows them to carry out their work remotely one or more days a week.

Un buen espacio para teletrabajo es tendencia en decoración para 2022

To achieve a comfortable and sophisticated workspace, a trend in interior decoration in 2022, it is no longer enough to set up any corner of the house: it makes sense to give it a fixed area and as wide as possible. We can do it with a desk like Tassel, with three drawers, Vintage Rustic style and made of recycled solid pine wood.

2022, a year of indoor wellness

Soothing tones with optimistic bursts of color, curved lines -and tasteful textures- that take us back to nature, natural and recycled materials and handcrafted pieces will set the trends in interior decoration in 2022.

In addition, it will also be a decoration trend in 2022 to create comfortable and stylish telecommuting stations, all with a single goal: to increase our level of well-being in the most important place in the world, our home.
