5 modern sideboards to change the aesthetics of your home

Until recently, sideboards were used to store the ample and valuable family dinnerware, as well as the carefully embroidered table linen, the cutlery for the holidays, the fine glassware. Now, when the social forms have changed and getting married is no longer ‘obligatory’, those traditional wedding gifts have also been lost, and with them, the typical function of this piece of furniture that used to be placed in the dining room.

However, modern sideboards are still more relevant than ever. In fact, now that their former function has been ‘liberated’ – although there are still those who use them to store lunch and dinner utensils – they have become multifunctional furniture perfect for adding that extra storage we always need at home.

Their style has also changed, making them an ideal object of desire for any room, including bedrooms!

Now, having overcome the bulky Castilian sideboards, with their dark wood and multitude of ornaments, the trend in sideboards bets on lightness and straight shapes, making them easy to integrate into any environment.

Also, although they are generally still made of wood, modern sideboards tend to show their natural grain, in the purest Eco-Friendly trend. In fact, many of them are made of recycled wood, while others include vegetable fibers in their doors, for which the cannage type grille is the most popular.

1. Sideboard trend: grille or cannage doors​

Cannage is a technique of weaving plant fibers (especially rattan) so that they form a recognizable pattern, like small octagons. They are more fashionable than ever thanks to their warm and natural look, which blends perfectly with trendy interiors.

They also seduce with their lightness and breathability, as they are fresh when it comes to seats, and avoid unpleasant odors, in the case of modern chests of drawers and dressers like Bastian, which will look great in natural environments of Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, Mediterranean or Nordic style. It has two doors that hide no less than six shelves, enabling a huge area to store all kinds of belongings. In addition, it is made of natural bamboo, with rattan grille fronts. Its legs, which raise it off the ground, make it easy to clean and make it especially stylish.

What do you like this design, but need something narrower? Don’t worry, we have that too! Among the modern sideboards, there are a multitude of possible sizes. For example, with 90 centimeters wide – unlike Bastian, with 120 – we find the Cutian sideboard, also with two doors and made of natural bamboo with cannage-type rattan grille fronts.

The storage space in this case is still quite ample, since this piece is, as we said, narrower, but also taller -120 centimeters compared to the 90 of the Bastian sideboard-. It also has six shelves, extraordinarily ventilated thanks to the use of natural fibers arranged as a grid.

​2. Mango wood design sideboards: extra sustainability (and beauty)​

Did you know that mango wood is one of the most sustainable woods in existence? The reason lies not only in its rapid growth – it can grow by about one and a half meters per year – but also in the way it is harvested. So, when these trees reach their mature age, they stop producing fruit. Then, the farmer has to cut them down and plant new specimens, and taking advantage of this circumstance, their wood is used to build furniture of a beautiful color that ranges from golden to chestnut.

These are pieces with a high natural luster, not too heavy, whose fibers compose a beautiful and inimitable pattern. But the best thing is that it is a very resistant wood, which ensures a durable purchase, and therefore, kind to the environment.

Among the modern sideboards, we find several made with the prized mango wood. For example, Chack, ideal in Japandi, Mediterranean, Wabi Sabi or Rustic style rooms thanks to the beautiful grain of its surface and its black iron handles. The upper part of the two doors that close it, in addition, is covered by a front of braided natural grille, which gives it an extra of actuality.

3. When it comes to choosing modern sideboards, the Mid Century style never fails!

The Mid Century style, i.e. ‘mid-century’ style, although it had its heyday during the 50s of the last century, has its roots in the early twentieth century in Modernism. This artistic and architectural movement, in its countless expressions (De Stijl, Functionalism, Bauhaus…) is characterized by the rejection of historical forms and the creation of new ones based on the rational analysis of human needs.

Thus, the design sideboards of this style are marked, like Modernism, by functionality, lack of ornamentation and clean and simple lines. And also by their timelessness, which shows why Mid Century pieces never go out of fashion, but always seem, in fact, rabidly current.

This can be understood by discovering, for example, the thinking of the designer and director of the Danish Furniture School Kaare Klint, a great inspiration for this movement. Klint’s school considered furniture as utensils that should fulfill their purpose in the same way that a work tool does.

Klint’s most important goal was, in fact, to create “timeless” items for everyday use, which is why the furniture of this trend always looks elegant and never outdated. The result delighted the international market, so much so that, during the 1950s, the United States became one of the largest importers of Danish furniture.

An example of this timelessness can be found in the Irvin wooden sideboard, with a natural-finish, glulam fir wood frame, two very useful and discreet sliding doors and two exposed shelves. Its slender appearance is due to its sculptural needle legs, a basic feature of Mid Century furniture that always looks stylish.
